Nike ‘Then & Now’ Olympic Pack
With the Rio Olympic Games only now a month away, anticipation is building nicely, and brands are starting to announce their big hitter releases to coincide with the greatest show on earth. The best release we’ve seen so far comes (unsurprisingly) from Nike and their ‘Then & Now’ Olympics Pack, a collection of trainers inspired by Team USA from past Games.
The collection features three reinventions from previous Olympics gone by; the Air Pegasus 92 (Barcelona ‘92), the Classic BW (Atlanta ‘96), and the Air Presto from Sydney 2000. The silhouettes remain true to their origins but have been updated with new materials and construction details which brings the Olympic spirit to 2016.
Nike Air Pegasus ’92 – Barcelona 1992
The first release is the Pegasus ’92 from the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. The Games saw the USA win a total of 108 medals, 37 of which were Gold. The original Pegasus featured a combination of thick leather and mesh, with bold ‘USA’ lettering tagged throughout the model.
The new Zoom Pegasus takes inspiration and aesthetics from the original but is far more sleek and lightweight than its predecessor. The addition of Zoom throughout the midsole means it’s far more comfortable on the sole than the original, while the upper has been stripped of most of its leather to make things lighter.
Nike Air Classic BW – Atlanta 1996
The USA’s last home Olympics is the setting for Nike’s next instalment with the Classic BW. The BW was originally created as an Athlete Only pair of trainers but was finally released to the public back in 2004.
The original pair of Classic BW’s came with a Nike branded flag patch on the heel, and while it doesn’t appear on the reincarnation, a USA branded patch can still be found on the tongue. The upper is constructed similarly to the Pegasus but also features bright pale tones with Red, Gold and Navy accents to keep things nice and Olympic!
Nike Air Presto – Sydney 2000
The final model in the collection dates back to the 2000 Sydney Games which saw Team USA take home 37 golds. The innovative Air Presto was Nike’s shoe of the games, with special USA and Australian versions produced for the teams.
The updated version takes on many of the original characteristics but have been fully updated with an all over Flyknit upper and lightweight Ultra midsole unit. The Olympic-inspired colourways continue too with the traditional palette of the Stars & Stripe’s sitting alongside dashes of Gold.
The Nike ‘Then & Now’ Olympic Pack is due to go on sale first thing on Thursday 7th July, barring the Classic BW Ultra which will launch later on in July. Head over to the Nike Website where prices will start around the £90 mark.
