Shorts-Friendly Footwear for SS18
The sun has finally arrived here in the UK and chances are you’ll be digging out those dusty old pair of shorts sooner rather than later. But while a crisp polo and a pair of your best sunnies are obvious partners in crime with your shorts, getting your footwear right for the occasion can be more difficult than we’d like to think.
Shorts are notorious for sending out the ‘casual’ vibe but sometimes you still need to be looking like you’ve made the effort. And when it comes to chunky footwear, shorts can be pretty unforgiving. So whether you’re heading out for a workout, want a simple street aesthetic, or want to be as formal as possible without having sweat in your chinos, here’s some footwear options for SS18 when it comes to wearing shorts!
Superga White 2750 Cotu Classic
Put simply, we think the main staple in your summer footwear rack should be a clean pair of white trainers. And for us, the Superga 2750s do the job better than anything. If standing the test of time is anything to go by, the 2750 was first produced in 1911 – so they’ve got the pedigree. With an extra strong, fully breathable, pure cotton upper, the timeless shape trainer is lightweight and feature a vulcanised rubber sole for some grip. This is the staple shoe of your summer and is the very definition of smart casual when it comes to trainers.

The most obvious style of footwear to wear when trainers just aren’t smart enough is the humble boat shoe. Though they’re often associated with mid-century preppy style, we love a boat shoe and these Sperry Top-Siders do just the trick. As with the Superga, the timeless design has longevity on its side having been first sold in 1935. These leather pair of beauties feature the signature non-slip rubber soles for a double dose of practicality and coastal style.
New Look Faux Suede Tassel Loafer
If you need something even smarter, a loafer is probably as good as it gets when it comes to footwear suitable for shorts. We know they’re not for everyone but they can be slipped on at a moment’s notice and can really add some sophistication to an otherwise laid back outfit. Our main tip would be go for a brown pair of loafers to dress it up. Something like these Faux Suede Loafers from New Look are ideal. Alongside its slip-on suede upper, they feature a classic shape round and signature loafer tassel detailing for a bit of added flair.
Lacoste Men’s Marice BL Canvas Slip-Ons
If you’re heading to sunnier climates in the summer, you’ll struggle to find something that says ‘holiday footwear’ more than these canvas slip-ons from Lacoste. From the beach to the boat deck, the Marice BL is a nautical-inspired shoe made for holidays. The rubber outsole adds some grip, while lettered branding at the heel tab and signature Lacoste crocodile branding finish the look.
adidas DEERUPT Runner
For those of you heading to the gym and in need of a real pair of casual runners, there’s not many better around at the moment that the adidas DEERUPT. New for the season, the DEERUPT prides itself on its geometric profile, featuring an ultra-flexible mesh upper covered in a layer of stretch grid webbing. A web-wrapped EVA midsole echoes the geometric look, while signature Grid webbing also gives subtle compression. The trainer also features foam pockets which are moulded into the sockliner for extra cushioning and security. They may be on the chunkier side, but they perform like a dream.
Timberland Courtside Oxford
But our favourite pair of shoes this summer are these Courtside Oxfords from Timberland. Sleek and simple, the Courtside Oxford features smooth full grain nubuck leather uppers and signature Timberland laces. Complete with breathable lining and eco-friendly outsole, these Oxfords strike the perfect balance between smart and casual.
