As spring is upon us, the daffodils begin to appear, and the sun starts to have his hat on (hip, hip, hip, hooray). As a result, we all start looking forward to booking those holidays, and getting our legs out. There are four key trends this spring/summer 2011, and we will look at them all, as well as finding some great options to complement them.
This season’s styles tend to be quite structured in general, with a shorter length being more acceptable. All the key trends can be worn shorter or longer, it’s up to you. You also have a choice of colours, with both muted colours and bright blocks being on trend. You also have a mix of usage to think about, with day shorts and swimwear being functional in their various environments but not often interchangeable.
Muted Tailored Shorts
With chinos being a wardrobe essential in the early part of this season (if you didn’t know that – you’ll just have to trust me) the catwalk looks to stick with the structured feel, and the tailored short looks to be a direct follow up. Interchangeable with chinos in most outfits, tailored shorts make for a smart alternative to the cargo shorts of years gone by. The following styles will give you a good idea of what I mean:
Team these with the following or alike for a chic summer look:

Clashing block colours are trending this summer, and this carries through to our shorts. This colour infusion can be a great trend for people who like to dress more casually. It is also a great way to showcase the trending summer colours; I’d go with purples, oranges, yellows and greens. Buy a combination of block colour tee’s and mix and match with your shorts of choice! Carrying on from the naval theme which has trended in the last two seasons come striped shorts. Alongside the stripes, come the checks that have been around in shirt format recently. These can present themselves in tailored short or swim short format, and make for a great patterned alternative to a muted tailored short. Try:
Complement the patterns with some simple naval-style accessories for a great ensemble:

Denim shorts are often on trend in summertime and this season is no exception due to their versatility and colour variations. As such I have given a range of possible colour options, although as mentioned you don’t necessarily have to stick to below the knee length. Cropped shorts need love too.
You can team denim shorts with pretty much anything, but this season I recommend a comfortable, festival friendly look. Try the printed tee of your choice, and set it off with some on trend men’s gladiator sandals.

These ideas will be a good guide to get you started for your summer outfit planning, or ready to put together for your holiday suitcase!
