Basic Hotel Bergen, Norway Review
Located at the start of the stunning Norwegian fjords and enclosed by breath-taking mountain views, you’d struggle to find many more picturesque cities in Europe than Bergen and we make Bergen one of the true city break gems in the Nordics. But as well as its beauty, Bergen is also expensive to say the least. Which is why finding an accommodation bargain can be a godsend. If you’re on the lookout for such a place – we recommend Basic Hotel Bergen.
Being Norway’s second city, there’s no lack of accommodation options in Bergen. But if you’re looking to save the pennies, the Basic Hotel Bergen is probably the best option in the city. Located in the heart of the City of the Seven Mountain, Basic Hotel features 43 rooms, ranging from Single Rooms to Triple Rooms.
Doing what it says on the tin, the hotel doesn’t come with too many luxuries – there’s no bar/restaurant, room cleaning needs to be requested, and sometimes there’s not even a receptionist on duty, but it does give you exactly what you need for a great hotel stay.
Despite the price, each room comes with far more amenities than we had anticipated. All rooms come with a private bathroom, free Wi-Fi, an electric kettle, TV, fridge for storing any drinks and food, hairdryer, wardrobe, and even a large desk. Quite honestly, there’s not much more you could wish from a hotel room in a city where spending time in your room is towards the lower end of priorities.
The hotel and room are decorated well with modern twist and we were very surprised with the floor space in the room – plenty of space to unload your suitcase! The bed was extremely comfortable and the hotel was very quiet. The lack of receptionist at times caused no issues and checking in and out was self-service and very simple to use.
The location is Bergen couldn’t be much better too with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. And while there’s no standard breakfast buffet or dinner menu, Basic Hotel has ties to nearby Godt Brød – probably the best bakery in town for breakfast – as well as Asian haunt Sumo for dinner.
The only criticisms we would make of our stay at Basic Hotel Bergen are that while things such as a kettle are very welcomed, there was virtually nowhere to plug said items in. So much so, we had to boil a kettle on the bedroom floor which was far from ideal. The shower head attachment had also snapped off which made showering more of a chore than it needed to be.
But overall, we’d highly recommend a stay at Basic Hotel Bergen – a comfortable, stress-free hotel that offers more than the name suggests. Located in Håkonsgaten 27, the Basic Hotel Bergen is a bargain with prices starting at NOK 795 (£75) for a Double Room. Head over to the Basic Hotel Bergen Website for more details and availability.
