Coolest Cooler goes crazy on Kickstarter
“Dude, your cooler is awesome,” is not a phrase often bandied around on the nearest seafront. Not at the moment, at least.
If the success of the ‘Coolest Cooler’ is anything to go by though, we could soon be looking at a future in which beachgoers are judged not on the depth of their tan or their volleyballing abilities, but on the coolness of their cooler.
Launched on Kickstarter recently, this product has been a ridiculous and unexpected success story. More than 23,000 backers (the number is constantly rising) have so far contributed over $4.5 million to the project which, when pitted against the original $50,000 target, is an absurd amount. And there are still 45 days to go.
So why is everyone so besotted with this cooler? This is the pitch given on the cooler’s Kickstarter page: “Regular coolers are boring, break easily and are a hassle to haul around just to carry the ice. The COOLEST cooler is 60 quarts of AWESOME packed with so much fun you’ll look for excuses to get outside more often.”
It’s true, regular coolers are not the most fascinating of objects. And, far be it from us to get caught up in any cooler-generated hype, but the Coolest does look like a fun thing to have around at any outdoor party. For instance, it contains a Bluetooth speaker (specs aren’t yet confirmed but we’re assured it will be pretty loud), a phone charger and, probably best of all, a drinks blender.
The idea seems to go something along these lines: if you’re going to be carting around a bucket of ice all day you are, at some point, going to want a cocktail, and why pay at a bar when you can make your own using your trusty cooler. Other neat features include a USB port for charging phones, wheels for moving around easily, plate and knife storage, an LED light, a cutting board, and even a bottle opener. This really is the Swiss army knife of coolers.
At around £110, though, it’s not going to come cheap. However, if the current hype is anything to go by it may not be long before the life and soul of the party is the drink-blending, food-cooling, phone-charging, all-around good guy cooler.
