Gran Hotel Kempinski Manzana La Habana, Cuba
With Obama’s recent lifting of the travel ban to Cuba from the United States, it’s only a matter of time before the island becomes one of the luxury holiday destinations. And Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group Kempinski is grabbing the opportunity with both hand by the announcement they will open Cuba’s first five-star hotel, the Gran Hotel Kempinski, later this year.
Originally built between 1894 and 1917 as the first European style shopping arcade in Cuba, Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana (to give it its full name) is situated in the heart of old Havana amidst UNESCO World Heritage sites, giving stunning views across the historic city with the likes of the Capitol and the Great Theatre of Havana both directly in view.
The five-story hotel will be housed within the historic Manzana de Gómez shopping centre among its 500+ shops and offices. Inside the restored neoclassical building, Gran Hotel Kempinski Manzana La Habana will offer 246 rooms and suites, ranging in size from around 430 to 1,600 square feet.
Each interior is designed with a crisp contemporary White palette with vaulted ceilings and large French windows – so all very Cuban. As well as three restaurants, a lobby bar, an on-site spa, there’s also a rooftop terrace with a swimming pool, giving stunning views across Havana. Naturally, there’s also an in-house cigar lounge.
Flanked by Bacardi rum’s art deco bell tower and the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Manzana de Gómez location gives guests at the Gran Hotel Kempsinki an easy walk to Old Havana’s main interconnecting artery Calle Obispo, while the famous Castillo del Morro lighthouse is only a 10-minute drive.
