Our Top 5 European Ski Resorts For 2016

The 16 Winter ski season is finally in full swing after a surprising lack of snow in lower parts. But fear not, there is still plenty of time left in the season to get some powder skiing booked in. For us Joes living in Europe, we have an abundance of top ski resorts all within a couple of hours from an airport. This year we will be praying to snow gods like we do every year but if you are looking for some inspiration of where to ski and party this Winter, read on for our top 5 European Ski resorts to visit this season.

No matter what your budget, or ability, we have something for everyone. Including resorts in France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria.

Courmayeur, Italy

Official Site / Piste Map / Webcam

Located at the foot of Mont Blanc in picturesque Italy, this resort offers a lively nightlife, great food and pretty decent skiing. If you are looking for a big mega-resort with huge piste runs then Courmayeur might not be for you (Chamonix is only 12km away). There is still plenty of good skiing to be had on a weekend trip, however. A recently opened, 360° rotating cabin, ski-lift is one of the most modern of its kind – we’ve not been on this lift so we can’t confirm how dizzy you will be when stepping off at the top. Maison Vieille, which is located up the mountain is a brilliant place for evening dinner and entertainment. We visited the place on a recent trip to Chamonix and can’t recommend it enough – dinner followed by an old school party is guaranteed to get the drinks flowing.

Verbier, Switzerland

Official Site / Piste Map / Webcam

This Swiss gem has been delivering some of the best on & off-piste action for many years now. Even though the resort is a bit of a celebrity haunt (don’t let that put you off), it will tick all of your skiing boxes. Brilliant apres-ski, stunning restaurants and excellent snow make this one of Switzerland’s top resorts. The only down-side is that it can be a little pricey at times. But if you’re heading out for some end-of-season action, make sure check out the Freeride World Tour taking place between 2nd-10th April 2016. The village gets a real festival ride with food stalls, late night parties and some of the best freeride skiers in the world taking on the infamous Bec Des Rosses mountain.

Val d’Isere, France

Official Site / Piste Map / Webcam

Val d’Isere has become one of the go-to ski destinations for us guys based in the UK. Year after year the resort delivers top quality snow along for the seasoned skiers who love to return here every year. Prices, like in most European resorts, have risen steeply to make eating out on the slope ridiculously expensive. That aside, it is a resort that offers a vast range of pistes thanks to the direct link to Tignes which will give you over 300km of piste to tackle. It is almost expected that a resort has a lively apres-ski offering and Val is no different – make sure you check out La Folie Deuce and La Chalet.

St Anton, Austria

Official Site / Piste Map / Webcam

St Anton is located in the Western tip of Austria and is another excellent resort offering top skiing and a lively apres-ski scene. After a day on the slopes make your way down to the awesome Mooserwirt or Krazy Kanguruh bars where the apres-ski begins with a bang. The town centre has a real charming ski village vibe to it and features much more than your average resort. Classic chalets, spas and expertly made cocktails. St Anton was also the birthplace of traditional downhill skiing as we know it. A handy fact that will no doubt impress the ladies in the bars & clubs.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Official Site / Piste Map / Webcam

Another classic Swiss ski resort that just oozes mountain village charm. Sitting under the ever-impressive Matterhorn, this resort is the ideal place for intermediate to advanced skiers looking for a slightly upmarket ski break. The ski area offers some must-ski off-piste areas as well as a 21km run that will leave your legs burning if attempted all in one hit. Zermatt is your picture perfect resort that will cost you a pretty penny, but what you get in return is a high-end resort that will cater to your every need whether you are getting up for first lifts or you are looking for a retreat in the mountains.
