How to Stay Young with SunLife
We’ve always been firm believers that age is just a number – and it seems like we’re not the only ones. To celebrate that belief, SunLife have been conducting a series of interviews with inspirational over 50s who show that it doesn’t matter how many years you’ve got under your belt, you can still practice your passions.
One such incredible example is the amazing Doc, an 85 years old who is hailed as the oldest tattoo artist in the world! SunLife headed to his tattoo parlour in Plymouth to ask him about his tattooing, where Doc argued that people often seem to give up too early at the idea of aging.
It’s often thought that skills and abilities disappear through the years, but for Doc Price, tattooing is one that ‘doesn’t seem to want to disappear’. Having got his first tattoo at the age of 14 – a ‘Mum’ one to keep his mother happy – Doc began tattooing by night after bricklaying during the day.
Doc perfected his skills on his fellow bricklayers and soon enough opened up his own tattoo shop over 47 years ago. He still works there today, tattooing his designs by freehand rather than using the modern technique of stencilling.
For Doc, tattooing is all about memories; “when we look back at our tattoos, we reflect on times that were good and times that were sometimes not so good.” He cited a memory in a supermarket where he came across a tattoo that he’d done years ago, saying that although the tattoo was older, it was “just a beautiful thing.”
