adidas Celebrate Man Utd’s Origins With the ‘Newton Heath’
Over the last few years, adidas Originals and Manchester United have been hooking up for a series of limited edition trainers. The first, the ‘Stretford’, was inspired by Old Trafford’s famed Stretford End, while 2016’s ‘Ashington‘ celebrated 60 years since Sir Bobby Charlton debuted for the club. Well, this year, the Three Stripes are commemorating the 140th anniversary of the club with the ‘Newton Heath’.
If you’re not familiar with your United history, the club hasn’t always been one of the most recognisable clubs on the planet. Founded in 1878, The Red Devils (or the Railwaymen as they used to be known) were originally Newton Heath LYR Football Club before changing their name in 1902.
To celebrate this heritage, adidas Originals have released their fourth collaboration with the club in the form of the ‘Newton Heath’. An entirely new silhouette, the trainer draws on the club’s origins with several design features, as well as taking the name from United’s birthplace in North-East Manchester.
The colourway takes inspiration from the club’s original Green and Gold kit, a colourway which also made some appearances in a few of United’s more lively away kits in the 90s. Alongside the Green upper, you’ll also find gold foil lettering bearing the shoe’s name.
Newton Heath LYR F.C’s first home was located at North Road, so to commemorate both the ground and the anniversary, the insole of each shoe features a screen printed map of the club’s old ground, while an “EST 1878” is debossed onto the heel of the trainer. The trainer is finished off with custom ‘Newton Heath’ tipped laces and a laser engraved Devil on the right foot heel.
The adidas Originals Newton Heath will be available exclusively from size?’s Manchester store on Friday 7th December. A pair will set you back £90. Find out more over at the size? Website.
