It’s official, the clock has struck midnight, the calendar has moved on to another year and that means one thing. Decent gossip as the transfer window is open!! It looks like West Ham are going to try and spend their way out of trouble with reported bids already in for Hetinga, Jelavic and Rickie Lambert, and you can be sure they won’t be the only club keeping the Premier Leagues fax machine busy. Will Arsenal add another forward? Will United sign a midfielder? Will Spurs sign any members of 5ive to go with S Club 7 they secured in the summer?

Swansea v Manchester City – Wednesday 1 January 2014 – 1245Ko

Swansea dominated play against Villa at the weekend but were unable to finish them off and this could be costly come the end of the season, they are now 5 without a win and desperately need to find someone to step up and put the ball in the net.

Whilst City rested a lot of players at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, you’d still have expected them to make lighter work of them than they did. Big favourites now to take the league title and they sit only a point behind Arsenal. Their ability to beat fellow contenders should see them home as long as they don’t get careless in fixtures like this one.

Premier League Injuries: Rangel and Britton are expected to start for The Swans as Laudrup goes in search of a winning formula, but he is still without Vorm and Michu. David Silva is suspended for City who also have Aguero, Jovetic and Richards missing through injury. Hart is expected to continue in goal despite receiving stitches in a wound at the weekend.

Arsenal v Cardiff City – Wednesday 1 January 2013 – 1500KO

Arsenal looked lethargic against Newcastle on Sunday, but yet the fixtures keep coming for them. After today they have an FA Cup tie against their nearest and dearest in Tottenham, so how Arsene Wenger choices to prioritise these games will be key.

Cardiff seem to be no further down the line in appointing a new manager so David Kerslake continues to hold the reigns. He must have thought management was easy until throwing away a two goal lead with 10 minutes left against Sunderland.

Premier League Injury News: The injury troubles are mounting for The Gunners who are now missing Gibbs, Giroud, Ramsey and Ozil for today’s game. Rosicky, Wilshere, Monreal and Vermaelen are also doubtful. Andrew Taylor will sit this out with a knock alongside Craig Bellamy for The Bluebirds.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 1-0

Crystal Palace v Norwich– Wednesday 1 January 2013 – 1500Ko

It’s only 32 days since the reverse of all of today’s fixtures were played and since Norwich beat Palace they’ve only picked up five points compared to Palaces’ nine.

Norwich’s ability to be able to string two decent halves together cost them at the weekend, they looked assured in the first half against United, but Welbeck came on, scored early and from then on it was one-way traffic.

Premier League Team News: Cameron Jerome is a worry for Palace after injuring a knee against City at the weekend. O’Keefe and Dikgacoi should feature though. Hooper has a tight hamstring and is a concern for the visitors who do have Turner back from suspension.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 1-1

Fulham v West Ham United – Saturday 1 January 2014 – 1500KO

A crucial six pointer! Fulham will be desperate to show some fighting spirit after getting trounced at Hull last time out, whilst West Ham threw away a lead twice against West Brom in the early Saturday fixture, a game they finished without a recognised Centre-Back and had 4 full-backs playing in defence. Fulham will be glad to be playing this today, before The Hammers can strengthen in the transfer market.

Premier League Injuries: Taarabt and Berbatov look likely to miss out for Fulham, although Scott Parker has overcome an niggle to play against his old side. The Hammers are still without a fit centre half, so McCartney and O’Brien are expected to start there. Morrison could return after injury to inject a bit of pace into the side.

Liverpool v Hull City – Wednesday 1 January 2014 – 1500KO

There can’t have been too many sides who have gone into Christmas Day top of the table but started the New Year in 5th place, but that is exactly what has happened to Liverpool on the back of losses to Manchester City and Chelsea.

Hull were every bit as good as Fulham were poor when hitting them for 6 at the weekend, where that result come from I’m not to sure after not picking up a win in their previous 5 games!

Premier League Team News: With Joe Allen out, and Jordan Henderson struggling, The Reds will be hoping Steve Gerrard can be pressed into action after missing four games on the bounce. Sakho is also a non-starter for the home side. Hull have Meyler available but will may choose to stick with the side that demolished Fulham.

Southampton v Chelsea – Wednesday 26 December 2013 – 1500KO

Southampton’s dismal December continued on Sunday when they lost out by that odd goal to Everton, but they may feel they have a chance against Chelsea who exerted a lot of energy when beating Liverpool in a frenetic game. The Blues know they need goals from their forwards if the title challenge is going to remain any more than a dream.

Premier League Team News: Clyne should start after a hamstring injury and Schneiderlin is available again after suspension, but Wanyama and Boric are no closer to a first team return. David Luiz guaranteed himself a New Year off when picking up a 5th booking of the season against Liverpool. He is joined on the sidelines by Lampard and Ivanovic. Ramires is back from his one match ban though.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 1-1

Stoke City v Everton – Wednesday 1 January 2014 – 1500Ko

A nine point Christmas may have been what the Stoke fans where dreaming of stepping into the festive fixtures but the reality has been very different with two heavy defeats so far.

Everton have sneaked up on the rails a little, probably due to the large amount of publicity Liverpool have received so far this season, but The Toffees go into the New Year above their neighbours in the table.

Premier League Injuries: The Potters are boosted with Whelan and Wilson retuning from suspension and Arnautovic after illness. Distin should be fit after a hamstring complaint, but Jagielka will be out for up to a month with the same problem. Howard will return in goal after suspension.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 1-1

Sunderland v Aston Villa – Wednesday 1 January 2014 – 1500KO

Another crucial game at the bottom of the table, and with only 9 points covering the bottom 11 sides it seems I could be writing this a fair few times between now and May.

Sunderland certainly used their leftover ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ card from Gus Poyet’s Christmas game of Monopoly when they rescued a point with two late goals at Cardiff, whilst Villa somehow escaped another home defeat against Swansea.

Premier League Team News: Borini, O’Shea and Johnson are all doubts for The Makems, but Poyet hopes to be able to call on at least two of the trio. Brown is still suspended. Vlaar and Benteke are both outside chances to return for Villa who are definitely without Ciaran Clark who is suspended.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 1-1

West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle – Wednesday 1 January 2014 – 1500Ko

If Nicolas Anelka’s spell at The Hawthorns will be remembered for anything come the end of his career it may well be for bringing the word ‘Quenelle’ into the English language. Whether it is Anti-Semitic or Anti-Establishment, is one for the FA to work out, but it has now taken the spotlight on how good his finishing was at The Boleyn on Saturday, it was like someone had turned the clock back 15 years.

Newcastle were unlucky when losing to Arsenal, in a game I really enjoyed watching, it was fast, skilful, gritty and nearly had an element of farce when a clearance from Szczesny was close to rebounding in via Remy’s face.

Premier League Injuries: Anelka is still free to play for The Baggies, but Caretaker boss Downing will have to decide whether or not to take him out of the firing line. Shane Long should return though. Newcastle have no new problems, but the main decision will be whether or not to incorporate Ben Arfa into the starting XI.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 0-0
Sky Sports Fantasy Star Man: Ben Foster

Manchester United v Tottenham – Wednesday 1 January 2014 – 1730Ko

Despite having an atrocious record against United, with only one win in recent memory and The Reds on a run of form that has seen them win their last four on the bounce, I expect Spurs to have a real go at Old Trafford and reckon this could be a goal fest.

They played very well against Stoke at home, but it will be interesting to see how Tim Sherwood approaches his first encounter with a side of real quality. So far he has preferred a 4-4-2 formation but will he be brave enough to try this away from home against the current champions?

Premier League Team News: Rooney’s fitness test could be the key to how this fixture pans out, but at the time of writing it still looks like the groin injury that kept him out at Carrow Road will do the same again here. Van Persie, Jones and Fellaini are all out as well. Paulinho misses out for Spurs for the next month after picking up ankle ligament damage after a crude challenge from Charlie Adam. Kyle Walker will return at right-back after suspension.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 3-2
Sky Sports Fantasy Star Man: Danny Welbeck

Well that’s the festive fixtures out of the way, and with a break in the Premier League programme next week for FA Cup duty it means I can put my feet up for a week! All that’s left is for me to wish everyone a fantastic New Year.
