The Euros are just a few weeks away which means we’re being taken down memory lane with all of England’s past glories – there are some, we promise! Some of the very best are coming from sponsors Continental Tyres here in the UK. In one of our favourites, Continental teamed-up with England goalkeeping legend David James to recreate one of those great England moments – Michael Owen’s goal against Argentina at France ’98!
We remember Owen’s goal like it was yesterday – as well as Beckham’s kick out at Simeone and David Batty’s inevitable penalty miss too, which brings a little less joy. Well, the England v Argentina World Cup Quarter Final actually took place in Saint-Étienne, which is one of the nine stadiums being used in Euro 2016. This video is the first episode of nine (to match the stadiums) that are due to be released over the coming weeks, with each covering one of the host venues for France 2016.
To celebrate their partnership with Euro 2016, Continental Tyres are releasing a whole host of videos that pit ex-footballers, commentators and footballing faces to historic challenges around the Euros. Their latest sees former England No.1 David James heading to Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne to see if he could recreate the goal which put Michael Owen on the map. With the aid of some football stand-ins (who may or may not be as good as Simeone, Zanetti and co.), James expertly recreates the first goal from the 2-2 draw with aplomb. Although the out-takes show it took the 45-year-old several attempts to find the target!
Also in the short video, Continental Tyres UK ask David James about the England team ahead of their Euro 2016 campaign, his love of art and his memories from that fateful night. Check out the video below and keep an eye on Continental Tyres UK’s YouTube Channel for all their upcoming ‘Road to France’ shorts!
You can also bag yourself a pair of tickets to England v Slovakia Euro 2016 Group Stage match, on Monday 20th June 2016 by entering the Continental Competition. Full details and TandC’s here!
