F1: Australian Grand Prix Preview
Last updated on November 15th, 2015 at 12:08 pm
The 2013 Formula One season kicks off this weekend in Melbourne, Australia and we will finally get to see who has evolved their 2012 car the most. McLaren ended the season with the fastest car but after a winter re-design and change in their driver line-up can we expect them to continue that momentum and their great history at the Australian Grand Prix? Judging by pre-season testing and this morning’s practice session, that currently stands as a resounding no!
With Pirelli having worked hard on the tyre compounds, we should expect several pit stops during the race and definitely some of the unpredictability which made the 2012 season so great. The team which can manage and understand the tyres most effectively in Melbourne may well be the race winner.
Don’t be surprised if the practice and qualifying times aren’t quicker than last season as the FIA have finally come to their senses and will only be allowing the use of DRS at the activation points rather than over the whole lap. I could never work out why this was the case so am glad it has been changed as it gave an unnecessary advantage to some cars.
Enough waffling, I will now basically pull some names out of a hat and offer some predictions.
- Mark Webber
- Lewis Hamilton
- Sebastian Vettel
- Fernando Alonso
- Romain Grosjean
There is absolutely no method or intelligence in those predictions, just a gut feeling and I honestly think any driver from Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus or Mercedes could win in Melbourne and no-one would be surprised.
That is that then, enjoy the first race and check back for a review next week. All the times you need for the weekend are below.
