So you’re now a 5-a-side regular but all you’ve got are either studs or normal running shoes. Which do you wear? The answer is neither. 3G and 4G pitches are a special beast and need to be respected. Wearing the wrong footwear – especially blades or full studs – can cause serious injury with many a knee blown out when turning sharply. So what should you be wearing on artificial pitches?
2G pitches (sand based), for example, are becoming less and less common place, so for the purposes of this post, we’ll be looking at purely 3G pitches (rubber crumb) and 4G pitches (artificial turf). And that means you need to be looking at AG football foots. These ‘Artificial Grass’ pioneers could be a life saver down at Goals and here’s the best on the market for the 2018/2019 season…
Our favourite AG on the market at the moment is this Furon 3.0 Pro from New Balance. Not only do we think it’s the best looking silhouette around, it features superior fit and comfort with a lower toe spring. The lightweight TPU and polyester mesh upper features a textured surface to help enhance ball control for the most aggressive strikers, while the TPU AG soleplate offers traction, balance and comfort. A modern masterpiece.
Nike’s Mercurial Vapor 360 is simply one of the best football boots around at the moment and the AG-PRO version is perfect for 4G. That said, a pair can set you back a serious amount, which is why we like the ‘Meu Jogo’ version which was designed for Neymar and is currently in the sale. Built for speed, the one-piece upper wraps under the foot for an adaptive fit, while micro-textured Flyknit construction provides touch at high speeds. A podular plate system offers responsive traction and Nike’s All Conditions Control (ACC) technology provides optimal ball control in both wet and dry conditions. If it’s good enough for Neymar…
But if you’re looking for something on a budget, you’ll struggle to find an AG football boot for better value than this adidas Predator. The Primemesh upper provides a comfortable, sock-like fit so you can move at high speeds, while control embossing on the upper gives you improved ball handling. The snug sock-like material fits like a second skin and the high-performance TPU-injected layers in the outsole are designed to stabilise movement on 3G and 4G pitches. A true classic of the genre.
Puma’s NETFIT upper technology has almost gone under the radar thanks to adidas’s Primeknit and Nike’s Flyknit but it’s just as impressive. We like these Future 2.1 boots which combine said tech with a form-fitting textile base material and knitted ankle sock for the ultimate in football boot customisation. The ultra-lightweight and flexible outsole allows you to play on either firm natural ground or artificial grass with ease.
For those who like their designs minimal but their quality high, look no further than the black/white Speciali Eternal Pro from Umbro. Crafted from K-Leather with an improved vamp package for touch and flexibility, this boot features soft touch collar lining and a memory foam insert on the tongue to aide fit and enhance comfort. It might look like a throwback but it’s anything but!
