Premier League Predictions & Team News

So, we’ve managed to reach the end of another Premier League season, and just two weeks ago it looked like the last day of the season was going to be a cracker. But we are almost done and dusted with the relegation places sewn up, and with Manchester City having one hand on the title, it certainly looks like the Premiership won’t be stopping in the Liverpool Docks area, anytime soon. Things are so bad for Sky they are even showing the Spurs v Villa game as their third fixture!

Although Liverpool are the team everyone love’s to hate, we for one as a little disappointed they won’t be champions. When it comes to entertaining, and at times quite brilliant football, the Anfield club are winners hands down.

Cardiff City v Chelsea – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500KO

One of the things I will miss about Cardiff’s demise is that I won’t be able to write about Cardiff’s pantomime villain of an own owner next season, as there is certainly material to be had there. Most fans were disgusted with his sacking of Malky Mackay midway through the season, and it really proved to be a disastrous decision with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming in and being unable to stop the rot that had by then set in. You really would have thought their lucky red shirts may have saved them.

Chelsea have certainly had a what if, of a season. They competed for so long on both Domestic and European fronts but ultimately came up short due to not having the same world class striking options that both City and Liverpool possess.

Premier League Injury News: Juan Cala is suspended for Cardiff’s Premier League last hurrah, whilst Craig Bellamy may make his last appearance before potentially retiring. There is also uncertainty whether it will be Cole, Lampard and even John Terry’s last games for Chelsea with the veteran trios contracts all up in the summer. Lampard is in doubt through illness whilst Etoo and Cech are injured.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 0-2

Fulham v Crystal Palace – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500KO

So according to Mo Fayed the reason Fulham have been relegated has very little to do with the fact that most of their side is old enough to play veterans football and they’ve seen 3 managers walk through Craven Cottages revolving doors this season. The reason? The fact that the new owner got rid of the Michael Jackson statue from outside the ground. How they wish they would have appointed a manager like Tony Pulis who has picked up a doomed Palace side and revitalised them into a mid-table team. The late comeback on Monday from the brink against Liverpool is a testament to the work Pulis has done.

If Liverpool fail to win the title, he will be our manager of the season.

Premier League Team News: Injury prone record signing Mitroglou could put himself in the shop window with a start today for Fulham who are missing Duff. Whilst Tony Pulis has a full squad to choose from.

Hull City v Everton – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500KO

Hull were decisive in January, snapped up two forwards with Premier League experience and haven’t ever really been in trouble towards the foot of the table all year, so Steve Bruce and Hull’s owner really do deserve a pat on the back about that. They have also qualified for Europe next season so a few more clubs can experience a trip to Hull and back.

Everton’s season has fizzled out a little since hammering Arsenal and looking odds on to finish 4th, but that really shouldn’t detract from what Martinez has done at the club in his first year. I certainly wasn’t expecting them to move up the table.

Premier League Injuries: Hull welcome back Allan McGregor from broken ribs and kidney damage suffered against West Ham ahead of next weeks FA Cup final. Curtis Davies will be rested.  Troare could return to the bench for Everton after a long lay-off, whilst Pienaar is fit to start.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 0-2

Liverpool v Newcastle – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500KO

It’s hard to sum up Liverpool’s season but the game at Palace on Monday can probably do it best, they’ve been a joy going forward all year but defensively they have been poor and being unable to find a balance between the two is what will cost them this year. With the added pressure of Champions League action next season, I think they may have to wait a fair few years to be in with a chance of challenging again.

Newcastle fans must be delighted the end of season is finally here, although some of the players decided the end of the season was January!

Premier League Team News: It would have been laughable at times last season to see how key Henderson could be for both club and country but Liverpool have faltered during his suspension and he will return to the starting XI, Enrique is also fit again.  Newcastle are without Papiss Cisse who is already out of the start of next season with a damaged kneecap but apart from that Newcastle are nearing full strength.

Manchester City v West Ham United – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500Ko

Liverpool fans are dreaming that ex-Reds players Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing can perhaps pull something out the bag and cause an amazing end to the season, like The Hammers did against Manchester United in 1995, but I just can’t see it. West Ham managed to stop Chelsea from scoring at Stamford Bridge this season with a 19th Century defensive show and may be able to produce something similar, but they never looked like scoring and without a goal City can’t lose.

I’m certainly not one of those fans who moan about City buying the title, you only have to look at Liverpool to see a side who made similar losses off the pitch last year. I think Pellegrini has done a good job this season and managed to find a good balance between defence and attack. The football they played mid-season was a joy to behold.

Premier League Injury News: City are at full strength with the return of Aguero, whose hamstrings seem to be more suspect than Michael Owen’s. The Hammers similarly have a full side to choose from.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 2-0

Norwich City v Arsenal– Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500KO

When the Canaries beat Sunderland back on 22nd March I was convinced they’d done enough to secure Premier League status for another year, but since that day they’ve only picked up one point and that was last week against Chelsea in what was a must win game. Although they defended as well as any team has at The Bridge this year they never looked like scoring which sums up the season pretty well. A total of only 28 goals in 37 games is poor and I know the guys here are very disappointed.

Arsenal ultimately fell away in the title race as they didn’t have the quality to replace the likes of Theo Walcott after he got injured in January. Whilst they have an abundance of quality midfielders on the ball without Walcott they’ve been very pedestrian and have struggled to stretch teams with pace.

Premier League Team News: Norwich may choose to bring in an injection of youth to the side now they are relegated with Josh Murphy expected to start.  Loanee Yobo is missing though along with Pilington.  Wilshere could return for The Gunners to help prove his fitness for the World Cup.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 2-3

Southampton v Manchester United – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500Ko

Did anyone predict these two sides would finish only one place apart in the table back in August?

Both Southampton and United are going to have big Summers ahead of them, The Saints will struggle to hold onto a number of assets like Shaw, Lallana and even their manager Pochettinho with United being amongst those most interested in purchasing them. It will be interesting to see just how much United actually spend in the summer and who manages to avoid the inevitable player cull at Old Trafford.

Premier League Team News: The Saints may have Ramirez back to fitness, whilst a number of players could make their last United appearances, including Vidic, Ferdinand, Young, Nani and even the gaffer Ryan Giggs. Rooney is still injured meaning youngster Wilson could continue after his scoring start to his career.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 1-2

Sunderland v Swansea – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500Ko

Hats off to Gus Poyet and what he has achieved at Sunderland in the last month. As written above I had condemned them after losing to Norwich at the end of March but a run of 5 games without defeat including wins against United and Chelsea and a draw against City means they have a realistic prospect of finishing 12th now.

Swansea will be fighting for that spot and the additional money it brings in, and with Garry Monk now confirmed as permanent manager they can go about planning for next season.

Premier League Team News: Poyet has said he will make changes to his side after the exploits of the past week with skipper Cattermole likely to be amongst those rested after turning an ankle in midweek.  The Swans are still without Spanish pair Angel Rangel and Michu.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 2-0

Tottenham v Aston Villa – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500Ko

I’m not sure whose sets of fans are more disappointed with how things have turned out this season. Spurs went into it full of promise after bringing 7 new players in the summer but perhaps only 1 or 2 of these players have shown any real quality, and their defence has been carved open numerous times this year. It will certainly be an interesting summer at The Lane but with a new stadium to build have they got the cash to splash this time round?

Villa didn’t really learn the lessons from last season and this one has almost been a carbon copy of last years. With the owner apparently interested in selling, who knows what will happen next time round.

Premier League Team News: Spurs will make a couple of changes to the side that were comprehensively outplayed at Upton Park last week with Capoue and Vertonghen both fit again and Kaboul suspended.  Gabby Agbonlahor is fit again for the visitors.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 2-0

West Bromwich Albion v Stoke City – Sunday 11 May 2014 – 1500Ko

The Baggies will survive this season, but left it late and will perhaps be looking for another new manager for next season with Pepe Mel likely to return to Spain to manage Malaga.  Stoke fans will be amongst the very few fans happy with how their side have gone this year. It was certainly a step into the unknown post-Pulis, especially after Mark Hughes disastrous spell at QPR, but he has steadied the ship at Stoke and can be quietly content with the job he’s done.

Premier League Team News: Morgan Amalfitano and Liam Ridgwell both return for West Brom whilst Stoke are with Assaidi.
Premier League Betting Prediction: 1-1
Sky Sports Fantasy Star Man: Graeme Dorrans

Well that brings a close to the season, but at least we have a World Cup to keep us ticking over this summer until August.

Barring any big money transfer offers at the Average Joes office I’ll be back again next year with the same jokes week in, week out so see you then!
