UFC 165: Jones vs Gustafsson
Last updated on November 15th, 2015 at 12:08 pm
Not one, but two title fights in the UFC 165 card makes for great viewing and a potential classic in the Jon Jones fight could make this an absolute blockbuster! I am definitely going to stay up for this one rather than record it for the morning.
Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson – UFC Light Heavyweight Title Fight
One of the most interesting fights for Jones to date as for once he will actually have a height deficit to Gustafsson although he will maintain his crazy reach advantage. Fighting another tall, rangy fighter will mean that Jones has to contend with different angles and also make things a whole lot different if they take it to the mat. Gustafsson also has some serious knockout power and great technical boxing so Jones may regret it if he doesn’t respect his opponent. I am really excited about this fight and think it could be a belter!
Prediction: Jones via TKO Round 4
Renan Barao vs Eddie Wineland – UFC Bantamweight Interim Title Fight
The second title fight of the evening sees Barao defend his Bantamweight Interim belt, many think that Barao is a worthy title holder and as Cruz hasn’t fought in almost two years, the belt should be passed over. Wineland is a decent contender but doesn’t have the record to match the outstanding Barao so I’m not confident of anything other than a dominant Barao performance and victory.
Prediction: Barao via Decision
Brendan Schaub vs Matt Mitrione
This fight has been put together purely for the fireworks as both fighters have a TKO rate of 80% +. A win and performance for either fighter may push them into the top 10 UFC heavyweights but it’s more about momentum for these Ultimate Fighter 10 team-mates. I hope this fight lives up to the billing and we see the hands go.
Prediction: Schaub via TKO Round 2
Costa Philippou vs Francis Carmont
This is going to be huge with both fighters currently on a win streak of five in the UFC. Whoever wins this fight will surely be catapulted into contender talk and with Philippou currently ranked seventh he will be desperate to not let his momentum fade away. Carmont will have the support of the Canadian crowd and this could be a classic striker vs submission artist fight.
Prediction: Carmont via Decision
Pat Healy vs Khabib Nurmagomedov
A huge amount of fight experience in the final main card bout sees a combined 66 fights with 51 wins. The only thing more impressive than that is Khabib’s record with 20 wins and no losses. Healy loves a submission but with Nurmagomedov having a strong wrestling base it will be his choice where this fight ends up. That could mean a long night for Healy.
Prediction: Nurmagomedov via Decision
