UFC 173 Preview : Barao Vs Dillashaw
Last updated on November 15th, 2015 at 12:08 pm
What a night of fights this has the potential to be! You would be happy with any of the main three fights headlining a card and the bonus is that one is a title fight.
Renan Barao vs TJ Dillashaw – UFC Bantamweight Title
A bit of a mismatch here but that is what happens when a champion like Barao beats every top guy in the weight class. Fighting and beating the same old guys gets stale so you have to chuck the chance out to another fighter or two. Barao is impressive wherever the fight goes and shouldn’t have any problems dispatching of the TUF alumni. Dillashaw will have to bring more than wrestling to this fight and perhaps use the threat of a takedown to strike with Barao, that doesn’t sound appealing however.
Prediction: Barao via TKO
Daniel Cormier vs Dan Henderson
Is Dan Henderson getting to old to compete with the elite guys now? Three consecutive losses made it seem that way but wins over Shogun bookending those defeats shows that there is still life in Henderson yet. Cormier is into his second fight since dropping to light heavyweight and is already at four in the rankings. A win over Henderson will surely secure him a title shot against the winner of Jones/Gustaffson. Hendo will be looking to use his power for that one shot knockout and I imagine Cormier will try to out work Henderson and look for an opening to finish.
Prediction: Cormier via Decision
Robbie Lawler vs Jake Ellenberger
The Welterweight division is looking extremely staked at the moment and with both these fighters coming off a loss, this fight has huge significance in keeping them in the top five and in the picture for the title. A huge sixty-nine fights between these two with fifty-one wins shows just how much experience will be in the Octagon with both fighters having beaten top guys and having knockout power we should get to see a real show on the feet. Whoever lands that power shot first will take this one!
Prediction: Lawler via TKO
Takeya Mizugaki vs Francisco Rivera
Two top ten bantamweights make this an interesting fight with the champion on the card and will allow the victor to really push on. Two strikers should make for an entertaining fight and the rest of their game seems to be a bit lacking. Be very surprised if this hits the floor without a knockdown!
Prediction: Rivera via TKO
Jamie Varner vs James Krause
Former WEC champion Varner takes on Krause but both fighters have a rather sketchy record in the UFC. Both fighters are very experienced and well rounded so it’s hard to tell where this fight will end up. Expect some smooth transitions and a high paced fight, while Varner’s record isn’t that great it is because he’s always fighting top guys.
Prediction: Varner via Decision
