Apple iPhone 12 Pro – Everything you need to know

If the new iPhone 12 is the phone that most every day users will go for, why should you spend more on the fancier iPhone 12 Pro? Well the new updates might make this a far more compelling option than last year’s iPhone 11 Pro.

Apple seem to have a unique take on their premium phone offerings. They don’t seem to just throw glitzy features at the phone that make for a good marketing headline. Well I’m sure they do think about that but it does really feel like they think about the people that actually use them. It feels like for the first time, the Pro moniker on the iPhone might be more than marketing BS. We won’t cover the 5G features, A14 chip and the new screen technology as we’ve already covered them in our iPhone 12 preview.

What’s new?

As with the iPhone 11, the design is familiar but new. The chassis is made from surgical grade stainless steel with a frosted glass back in the new square shape. There’s a new range of colours – Silver, Graphite, Gold and Pacific Blue. It has an IP68 water resistance rating allowing it to be submerged for up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 6 metres.

The camera module has same serious upgrades over the 11 Pro. A new wide angle lens allows for better low light photography and quality. The ultra wide is improved too and the telephoto lens now has a longer focal length meaning you can crop into your subject more. Especially good for portraits. The all-new Apple ProRAW will be a much praised addition for photographers. Allowing you to edit RAW photos but still keeping the computational data that makes the iPhone images so good.

LiDAR is here for the first time. It not only allows for more detailed and accurate augmented reality but it helps the camera focus in dark situations up to six times faster. It also helps with the portrait mode as the camera knows exactly where your subject is in 3D space.

Video quality has taken a huge leap forward with HDR video and the first end-to-end Dolby Vision video experience. The iPhone 12 Pro is the first and only camera that can shoot Dolby Vision in camera. I don’t know a huge amount about the format but I do know the colours and quality of Dolby Vision is very very good.

Taking it to the max!

The iPhone 12 Pro Max not only has a bigger 6.7″ screen but it also takes the camera module to another level. The bigger body of the phone has allowed Apple to fit a bigger sensor and a bigger 5x zoom for the telephoto. Image stabilisation is also much improved with a new sensor based system rather than the lens based one in previous phones. That bigger sensor allows for “87% better low light photos” thanks to bigger pixels. Here are some examples of what you can achieve.
