Laptops and Notebooks are coming with less and less USB ports these days, yet the average Joe still has plenty to plug in. Well, Chinese design student Gonglue Jiang thinks he’s come up with a solution, and we think he might be on to something. Introducing the InfiniteUSB.
Like all great ideas, it’s so very simple. InfiniteUSB is an open chain of USB ports, granting an unlimited supply of open slots. Whenever a new InfiniteUSB is plugged in, a new USB port will be created, allowing you to daisy chain multiple devices by placing a female port on the backside of every USB plug. Instead of forcing you to constantly hot swap devices into that one port, InfiniteUSB keeps all your cables connected, with only one port from your laptop.
To make it extra secure, the ends of each USB cable snap together magnetically to make storing them practical and also prevents your wires from becoming tangled in your bag. We think it’s rather ingenious.
Creator Gonglue Jiang explains how he came up with the idea: “One day, on a bus to the airport. The work scenes earlier that day kept flashing back. There were moments that I was pretty frustrated by my computer. I wanted to charge my cell and iPad at the same time, preparing for the trip. But I was not able to do so due to the limited number of the USB ports. An idea suddenly crossed over my mind. If I could offer another port while using this only one port, then technically I could have infinite USB ports for my tasks.”
Jiang spent a year finding the best USB cable manufacturer to make it happen and eventually landed on Vojotech, with USB cables that are stylish, sophisticated and slick.
The InfiniteUSB is being sold on Kickstarter and has a target of $10,000. With 7 days to go, it has already raised $150,000. You can get an InfiniteUSB for $10 going up to $80 for a pack of 5 with optional colours. Get purchasing on the InfiniteUSB Kickstarter Website.
