When is a bulb more than a bulb? When it can change to suit your mood, activity or time of day. That’s the main appeal of any multicolour smart bulb. We’ve been playing with the Tapo L530E from TP Link to see if it’s the ideal budget choice.
Back in October last year I tested the Tapo L510E and I’ll be honest, not only did it impress with it’s simplicity and ease of use but in the two months since, I have gone from a home with zero smart bulbs to replacing all the bulbs in every room in my house (albeit with ones that work with Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem – More on that later). It was a literal lightbulb moment for me.
The L530E is very similar with the simple difference in that it can change to a multitude of colours instantly. Rather than just dimming (which of course it does too). It has a 60w output and can be purchased in bayonet fitting too (you need to search for Tapo L530B for that version).
The different colours are more than just a gimmick. I find a low blue light is better for watching movies than other colour. A warm orange or yellow is nicer in the evening than a stark white light. Maybe a pink or purple for a more romantic ambiance? The choice is yours.
The Tapo bulb is easily controlled via the smart phone app and can be easily controlled via Alexa or Google Home. It doesn’t need a separate hub to work either. The App allows you to set schedules, change the colour/brightness
Unfortunately it doesn’t have Apple HomeKit support so don’t expect to be able to use the standard Home app on your iPhone/iPad etc. But it costs less than bulbs that do.
Overall the L530E is a good quality and well priced smart bulb that is a doddle to use. If you have no need for it to work with Apple HomeKit then it will work great for you.
The TP Link Tapo L530E is currently on offer on Amazon for just £12.99
