Ultimate Ears BOOM Review

The portable speaker market has become rather congested of late with several big named brands launching products as well as several Kickstarter projects. In our experience we have always found one or two niggling issues with what we have tested and not a single one could tick all the boxes. Ultimate Ears BOOM (UE BOOM) seem to tick more boxes than most and is in a simple package. So apart from having a strangely cool name, is it any good? Oh, and we also have one to giveaway!

It would be easy to simply put, YES, but you deserve more than that. The UE BOOM speaker fitted in to our day-to-day lives so easily that we couldn’t work out why we hadn’t had one sooner. Everything about it oozes cool. The slick design, vast array of colours and easy to use buttons is what makes this appeal to its modern target audience and it couldn’t be easier to use.

The speaker only features 4 buttons – 2 large buttons for the volume, a power button and a bluetooth connectivity button. We love the simplistic design and it’s this simplicity that helps to make this such a cool product. A wide range of designs are available (20 in total) ranging from a slick all black design through to specially commissioned pieces by world famous artists.

An easy to use smart-phone app (which you don’t even really need to use) and super quick pairing system via bluetooth means anyone with a smartphone can take control of the music for you and your friends. The speaker produces a fully immersive 360º sound which gives a full, balanced outlay as well deep bass. Open up the app and you can choose from 4 pre-set EQ setting which includes a bass jump setting described as ‘Rave, riot and party with enhanced bass’ – we’re fans of this setting. And if you have two speakers you can pair them up via the app to work together as a left and right speaker or to work together to create an impressive, and loud, sound experience.

The sound could be slightly more refined and there are other brands who can deliver perhaps something a little crisper. But, none of these competitors have managed to create a portable bluetooth speaker that you can take absolutely anywhere, deliver quality sound and provide at least 15 hours of battery life. And did we mention it is waterproof? You know those annoying ‘youths’ on the bus who play their crap music out loud on a tin-pot smartphone speaker.. Well now you can expect to hear the same crap music but with excellent sound quality.
