Now space is a big place right? Well on Tuesday of this week NASA has just reported that a US satellite owned by Iridium has crashed into an older Russian satellite at high speeds. The crash and the resulting debris can be seen above Serbia and are expected to remain visibal for weeks before buring up in the earths atmosphere.
This is the first reported incident of this kind in history and no-one is claiming responsibility, though my guess would be as the Russians don’t use that satellite anymore and is perhaps of old military importance the finger will be pointed in their direction. Interesting you can’t dump on earth, but apparantly you can leave old, un-used nuclear powered satellites orbitting around our globe…
