Filmmaker Steven Spielberg unveiled the biggest news to fallout from the E3 exhibition in LA by introducing the world to controller-free gaming. Project Natal from Microsoft is new motion sensor technology for the Xbox 360, it combines an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone and custom processor running proprietary software to track your every move and sound.
“The next step in interactive entertainment is to make the controller disappear,” said Spielberg “With ‘Project Natal,’ we’ll see games that bring everyone together through technology that actually recognises us”
Sounds pretty exciting but will it live up to the hype? We will apparently be able to play sports, sing and dance, fight and whatever else developers decide to put in front of us. Apparently specs and developer packs have already been released to software houses for game development.
Apparently Project Natal also recognises voice, including changes in your tone which seems a bit odd bearing in mind Microsoft’s own voice recognition is always wrong!!! Natal will even be able to log you in just from facial recognition.
It all sounds amazing, and I do hope it becomes a reality, and one that we can all afford…
